How Buying Wallpaper Here Works

You take the books home, live with the paper in your own light for a few days, and order when you are sure. The library is the biggest part of this end of the shop and it turns over constantly.

Bring the room measurements and the rolls get worked out at the counter with you, so you are not guessing and you are not left two rolls short of a batch.

The library

The Sample Book Library

This is the part of the shop people lose an hour in, and we do not mind that at all.

The books are out on the floor rather than behind a counter. Sanderson, Zoffany, Harlequin, Designers Guild, Colefax and Fowler and the rest sit alongside each other, so you can put two papers side by side before you decide.

Types

Vinyl, Woven, Printed and Fabric Coverings

They are not all the same thing, and the difference matters once it is on a wall.

Vinyl takes a wipe, which is why it ends up in kitchens and halls. Printed papers give the finest detail. Wovens and fabric coverings add texture you can feel, and they suit a room you want to feel warm rather than flat.

Scope

A Feature Wall or the Whole Room

One wall is a small job and a big change. It is also the cheapest way to use an expensive paper.

A whole room takes more thought, because a large pattern that looks great in a book can shout in a small bedroom. Bring the room dimensions and we will tell you honestly which papers will cope with four walls.

Coordination

Matching Paper to Curtain Fabric

This is where a shop like this earns its keep. The paper books and the fabric books are in the same room, from the same houses.

So you can hold the paper against the cloth in the same light before either is ordered. A lot of ranges run a paper and a fabric off the one design, which is worth knowing before you pay for both separately.

Quantities

Working Out How Many Rolls

Bring the wall measurements and the ceiling height.

We work the rolls out at the counter, allowing for the pattern repeat, which is the thing people forget. A big repeat can add a roll or two to the same room. Better to know that before you order than halfway up the last wall.

Supply

Ordering and Lead Times

Some papers are held in stock and some are ordered in. We will tell you which yours is before you commit.

Order the whole room at once so it all comes from the same batch. Papers from two batches can sit slightly differently in shade, and you will only notice once it is on the wall.

Fitting

Hanging It: What We Do and Do Not Do

We supply the paper. We are not a decorating contractor, and we will not pretend otherwise.

What we will do is tell you what your paper needs, paste the wall or paste the paper, and give you the names of decorators around West Cork who hang the stuff properly. Good paper hung badly is money burnt.

Why here

Why Take the Books Rather Than Buy Online

A screen lies about colour and it lies about scale. You need the actual paper on your actual wall at your own time of day, which is why the books go home with people rather than staying on a shelf.

You also get the batch handled properly. Ordering short and coming back for one more roll is how people end up with two shades in one room. Matching a paper to the curtains in Cork range is done at the same counter, with both samples in your hand.

Questions About Wallpaper

These are what people ask at the counter. Anything else is quicker on the phone. Books go out to the towns too, and curtains and blinds in Clonakilty covers the coast road end of it.

Next step

Take the Books Home for the Weekend

Paper looks different in your own light. That is not a sales line, it is just how north-facing rooms work.

So take the books home, stick the samples up, and live with them for a couple of days. Call in Tuesday to Saturday, or ring 023 884 7123 and ask what we have in your colour.

F.A.Q.

Can I take sample books home?

Take them for a few days and see the paper in your own light before you order. That is what the library is for.

Do you sell paste and tools?

Ask at the counter. We will tell you what your paper needs and what to hang it with.

Can you order a paper you do not have a book for?

Often, yes. Bring the name and the reference number and it gets sourced if it is still in print. Matching it to curtains in Cork is done at the same counter.

Do you recommend decorators?

Ask in the shop and you get names of people around West Cork who hang paper well. For a whole room it is often worth planning it with an interior designer in Cork first.

When wallpapering a room, where do you start?

Start at the least conspicuous corner and work away from it, so the inevitable mismatch lands where nobody looks. A plumb line first, always, because no wall is straight.

Can I wallpaper a room myself?

Plenty of people do, and the counter will tell you what your paper needs. For an expensive paper or a tricky wall, ask for a decorator's name instead.

Do you paste the wall or the paper?

It depends on the paper, and the roll label says which. Non-woven papers are usually paste-the-wall, and getting that wrong is the most common way a job goes badly.

What are common wallpapering mistakes?

Ordering short, skipping the plumb line, and not checking the batch numbers match. All three are avoidable at the counter before you leave with the rolls.

Next step

Bring the sizes, or let a fitter take them. Either way you get a date at the measure for wallpaper.
