Curtains in Cork, Made in Our Own Workroom

Curtains here are cut and sewn in our own workroom in Enniskeane and hung by our own fitters anywhere in Cork. You pick the cloth in the showroom, we measure the window, and the pair is made to that room. Ring 023 884 7123.

The difference

What Made to Measure Actually Changes

It means the drop comes off your window and the cloth is cut to it. Nothing is hemmed up on the day to make it fit.

Pattern is matched across the pair. Fullness is worked out from the width of the track, not from a chart on the back of a packet. That is the whole reason a made curtain hangs the way it does and a shop-bought one does not.

Fabric

The Fabric Houses on Our Shelves

Sanderson. Colefax and Fowler. Designers Guild. Romo. Zoffany. Harlequin. Nina Campbell. Osbourne and Little. Jane Churchill. James Hare silks. Villa Nova.

The books are all out on the floor and you can take them home. Most people take two visits to settle.

Construction

Headings: Pencil, Pinch, Wave and Eyelet

The heading is the part at the top, and it decides both the look and the metreage.

Pencil pleat is the traditional one and takes the most cloth. Triple pinch pleat is dressier and holds a fold. Wave hangs in a soft, even S and suits a plain modern room. Eyelet and tab top are simple and sit on a pole. Pick the heading before the cloth is ordered, not after.

Warmth

Linings, Blackout and Interlining

Standard lining keeps the light down and protects the face fabric from the sun.

Blackout lining stops it. Interlining is a soft layer sewn in between the two, and it is the one people forget. It gives a curtain real weight, it makes it hang better, and it makes a genuine difference in a cold room with a big window.

Detail

Pelmets, Swags and Tails

For a high ceiling or a period window, a pelmet finishes the top and hides the track.

Swags and tails are the dressier version of the same idea. Both are made to the shape of your window, and both can carry a braid, a fringe or a key tassel off the trimmings wall.

Smaller jobs

Ready-Mades, Alterations and Re-Heading

Not every window is worth a full pair. We keep ready-made curtains for a spare room, a rental or a job that just needs covering.

We also take in curtains you already own. Shortening, relining, and re-heading are ordinary workroom jobs, and often a good curtain in the wrong house only needs the drop changed.

Lead time

How Long a Pair of Curtains Takes

The honest answer is that it moves. It depends on the season, on the workroom, and on whether your cloth is in stock at the mill.

So we give you a date at the measure rather than a slogan. If you are working to a wedding, a move or a Christmas, say it out loud that day and we will tell you whether it is on.

Why here

Why Have Them Made Here

Your cloth is cut and sewn in our own workroom by our own curtain makers, so the person who sews your curtain is reachable if anything needs changing. Nothing is sent away to a factory.

You also get the sample out of the book and home with you before you commit. Cloth reads differently on your wall than under a showroom light, and that is where most regrets come from.

Questions About Made-to-Measure Curtains

These come up most often at the counter. Anything else is quicker on the phone.

Cost

What Decides the Price

The fabric decides most of it. A wide window in a heavy patterned cloth eats metres, and a pattern repeat pushes that up again.

After that it is the heading, the lining and whether there is interlining in it. We price the job in one figure, cloth, making, track and fitting, so nothing arrives as an extra at the end.

Next step

Book a Curtain Measure in Cork

Call in and go through the books, or ring 023 884 7123 and a fitter will call out and measure.

If you want a Roman blind in the same cloth, we will make both together. We measure for curtains and blinds in Kinsale, Skibbereen, and everywhere in between.

F.A.Q.

Can you copy a curtain I already have?

Bring it in. If the heading and the make up are clear, we can match it in a new cloth.

Do you supply the pole or track as well?

Both, and we fit them. There is a large range of poles, tracks and electric rails in the shop, and the curtain poles in Cork side of the job is measured at the same visit.

Do you alter curtains bought elsewhere?

Shortening, relining, and re-heading are all normal work for the workroom. Bring them in with the drop you want, and ask about blinds in Cork at the same counter if the room needs both.

How much fabric will my window take?

Bring the width and the drop and we will work it out with you at the counter in a few minutes.

How much does it cost to have curtains made to measure?

The cloth is most of it, then the lining, the heading and the drop. Bring your width and drop to the counter and you get one figure for the finished pair rather than a price per metre.

Is it worth getting curtains made to measure?

For a wide window or a deep drop it is the only way to get it right, because ready-mades stop at a few standard sizes. For a small standard window the gap is narrower.

Should curtains be lighter or darker than the wall colour?

Lighter blends the window into the wall and darker makes a feature of it. Bring a paint chip in and hold it against the cloth rather than trusting either on its own.

Do longer curtains make a room look bigger?

Hanging the pole higher than the frame and running the drop to the floor does lift a room. It is one of the easiest changes to get right at the measure.

Next step

Bring the sizes, or let a fitter take them. Either way you get a date at the measure for curtains.
